Mel Tierney American Legion Post Collection

Park Ridge Public Library, as a participant in the North Suburban Library System's Digital Past project, has digitized a collection of index cards and newspaper articles gathered by the Mel Tierney American Legion Post during World War II. The partially typed, partially handwritten index cards contain information about service men and women from Park Ridge. Most of the cards include newspaper articles from the two Park Ridge papers which were glued onto the back of the cards.Willard Von Bergen Held by Japs- Pals Have Been Missing Since '41

Over the course of three years, the 1467 index cards became over 6000 pieces when all of the newspaper articles were scanned as well. The paper items were scanned and converted to JPEG files so they could be seen on the Internet, like the two pictures on this page [just click on them to enlarge]. Unfortunately, the library cannot confirm that this collection includes all of the Park Ridge residents who served in World War II. People at the Mel Tierney post do not know who compiled this file during the war. Please contact the library if you have any more information about this collection.

The easiest way to search is by using the service person's last name, but searching for an address, a place name, or a branch of military service may also yield results. If no information was collected for certain individuals, then no information would be available on the site. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to email or call the library.
